As adults, most people realize how much their childhood experiences influenced who they are today. Sometimes the seeds are planted early – even during the first few years. Of course, that doesn't mean parents know how to raise their own children the right way, even with the best intentions. Enter the World Health Organization, which recently released its very first Guidelines on Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour and Sleep for Children Under 5 Years of Age.

Breastfeeding could be one of the healthiest things you can do, with benefits for both mother and child. For baby, benefits include reduced risk of colds / viruses, protection against chronic disease, and reduced risk of sudden infant death syndrome. For mom, stronger bones, less risk of weight issues, better post-delivery healing and even a reduced risk of certain cancers.

We've talked in recent issues about the amount of time children are spending staring at screens – computers, tablets, laptops and mobile phones – and some of the health consequences, including poor posture. Physical activity also takes a hit in the face of excessive screen time, and children aren't the only ones at risk. Screen time and movement don't mix, regardless of age.

How important are your kidneys? They're responsible, first and foremost, for filtering waste out of the body. Unfortunately, people abuse their kidneys with processed foods, excess sodium, painkillers, inadequate water intake and excessive alcohol consumption. The good news: a plant-based diet can protect them from damage – but only the right kind of plant-based diet.
