"Every day as a clinician, teacher, and researcher I use knowledge gained through research. As a clinician, I want real information on how to make therapy safe and effective for my patients. As a teacher, I must stay up-to-date to insure I am preparing future practitioners to be their best. As a researcher, I stand on the shoulders of those that came before as I strive to learn more about this powerful therapy."
- JoEllen Sefton, PhD, ATC, CMT Dear john,
Imagine the difficulty of providing care to clients without evidence-based research. Research affects every aspect of the work you do; it influences the techniques you use to get clients out of pain, and inspires the articles and conferences that keep you informed.
Research is the only way to establish the relevance of therapeutic massage and open communication with medical professionals. MTF donors have funded over $1 million in research grants since 1990; but there is much more work to do. With your support, we can continue to fund research grants such as our 2018 grant to Nationwide Pediatric Children's Hospital, which uses massage to alleviate children's pain without predisposing them to opioid abuse.
You can help ensure that therapists have access to the tools they need to thrive and deliver quality care: a free, open-access peer-reviewed journal, educational infographics, CE courses, podcasts, research posters and other resources.
You can make it possible for us to offer conferences, such as our May 2019 International Massage Therapy Research Conference, which will bring together MT researchers, allied medical professionals, and therapists to discuss topics such as how massage therapy can help with the Opioid Crisis or assist those in chronic pain. Research is vital to the survival of our profession. It improves client care, quality of educational materials, and the health of real people. Research takes time, dedication, and money. The good news is that we can all contribute. Please donate to support research.
With our sincere appreciation, Douglas Nelson, LMT, BCTMB, CNMT
